Kim Petras
When: 15th February 2024
Location: O2 Academy
Kim Petras is one of pop’s most in-demand stars. Coming to Glasgow’s O2 Academy on 15th February 2024.
Following the release of her debut studio album Feed The Beast, Kim Petras has announced a string of UK dates for February 2024, stopping at Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester and London.
Born in Cologne but based in the buzz of Los Angeles, Kim Petras’ escapist and racy style of house and EDM has made her an international phenomenon in high demand – not least from the likes of Nicki Minaj and Sam Smith.
Petras was born into a musical family, her sister a singer and her mother a choreographer. As a teen she released her first single, 2008’s ‘Fade Away’, followed by ‘Last Forever’, ‘Die For You’ and ‘Boomerang’ on German label Joyce Records. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career in the early 2010s and worked with many producers, including the production team The Stereotypes.
Her breakthrough came in 2017 with the viral hit ‘I Don’t Want It At All’, with an accompanying music video including a cameo from Paris Hilton. That year saw a string of successive synth-pop singles such as ‘Hills’ and ‘Slow It Down’, but in 2018 she released the EPÂ Turn Off The Light, Vol 1, which boasted a darker electro sound with a Halloween-themed edge, including the likes of ‘TRANSylvania’, ‘o m e n’ and ‘Boo! Bitch’. Her sound was adjacent to the burgeoning hyper-pop scene, which attracted her to Charli XCX on ‘Unlock It (Lock It)’ and the late Scottish producer Sophie on ‘1, 2, 3 Dayz Up’.
Debut Album
Petras released her awaited debut studio album in June 2019. Clarity was critically adored and full of deep, late night beats, including the singles ‘Icy’ and ‘Broken’. Not long after she released Turn Off The Light, which built on the original EP but with new additions including the dark bops ‘Demons’ and ‘There Will Be Blood’.
The 2020 single ‘Malibu’ became something of a lockdown escape for many, especially in the UK where the song charted. With its bright, summery sheet it added another string to Petras’ already impressive bow. Having monitored this development, in 2021 Republic Records offered her a major label contract. She performed her first single with the label, ‘Future Starts Now’, at both MTV’s Music Video Awards and European Music Awards, making her the first out trans act to perform at these events.
In early 2022 Petras released the racy, sex positive EP ‘Slut Pop’. That same year she appeared alongside Sam Smith on ‘Unholy’, one of the biggest tracks of the year. They became the first openly transgender woman and non-binary artists respectively to both top the Billboard Hot 100 and win a Grammy Award.
Petras’ debut studio album with a major label, Feed The Beast, is set for release on 23 June 2023.
