One of the most talked-about new names of the past year, Sombr makes the kind of songs that make heartbreak feel a little more fun.
Born Shane Boose and raised on New York’s Lower East Side, Sombr started making music in his bedroom as a teenager, teaching himself to write, record and produce his own songs. That DIY instinct remains at the heart of his sound today: a distinctive blend of indie rock and alternative pop delivered with dreamy production and powerful vocal melodies.
His breakthrough came with ‘back to friends’, a bittersweet take on the impossibility of returning to friendship after a relationship ends. The song exploded online before becoming a global hit – certified platinum in the UK, France and Australia to name a few – while follow-up ‘undressed’ proved Sombr far from a one-hit wonder.
Sombr’s debut album, I Barely Know Her, arrived in August 2025 and turned that early promise into a fully realised world. Written entirely by Sombr and co-produced alongside acclaimed producer Tony Berg, the album moves between hazy indie rock, soaring pop and stripped-back confessionals. Alongside his earlier viral hits, the record also features now fan favourites ’12 to 12′ and ‘we never dated’. I Barely Know Her reached No. 10 on the UK Albums Chart, and led a Variety journalist to conclude that Sombr “sounds like he’s stepped out of the bedroom and onto the big stage, bursting with ideas and equipped with the skills to see them through.”
As the stages get bigger, the bangers keep coming, too. Sombr entered 2026 as a Grammy-nominated Best New Artist, following a breakout year that saw him win an MTV VMA and take his music to major US television shows. With new tracks including ‘Homewrecker’, ‘My Body Isn’t Ready’ and ‘Potential’ adding to an already impressive catalogue, and the You Are The Reason Tour coming to the UK and Europe in spring 2027, Sombr looks ready to make an even bigger mark on the pop landscape.
