Scottish singing sensation Amy Macdonald fell in love with music at the age of 12 when she was inspired by hearing rock stalwarts Travis perform at Glasgow’s popular T In The Park festival. On a family trip soon after, she even decided to treat herself to a CD – Travis’ The Man Who – instead of ice cream. Macdonald was so moved by that album, it inspired her to start writing lyrics as well as pick up a guitar and teach herself to play. 

Two of her earliest songs – The Wall and Fade Away – were conceived from her sister’s infatuation with famous people. By the age of 15, Macdonald was performing acoustic shows around Glasgow organised by the Impact Arts community group that had come to her school to work with kids interested in music. She played covers as well as original songs from her growing catalogue.

Instead of going to university, Macdonald decided to defer and continued to write and record demos in her bedroom, which led to a label deal with Vertigo (Razorlight, The Killers).

In 2007, Macdonald released her debut album This Is The Life, boasting the chart-topping title track and lead single Mr Rock & Roll as well as a modern version of the Scottish folk classic Caledonia. It reached the No.1 spot on the albums chart in the UK and nine other countries, plus saw her named Best Newcomer at the 2008 Silver Clef Awards.

Amy’s second album

Macdonald’s No.4-charting second album, A Curious Thing, came out in 2010 and spawned the singles Don’t Tell Me That It’s Over, Spark, Love Love, Your Time Will Come and This Pretty Face. She took a year off before beginning to write songs for her third album, 2012’s Life In A Beautiful Light. Another five years passed before the arrival of Under Stars, which she preceded with a performance of its lead single Dream On on BBC Scotland’s Hogmanay 2017 celebration show. 

The following year Macdonald got married in Las Vegas to footballer Richard Foster and in 2019 began recording music for her next album. She released its lead single, The Hudson, in summer 2020 and it peaked at No.12 on the Scottish singles chart. The album called The Human Demands came out that October and featured three more singles: Crazy Shade Of Blue, Fire and Statues. She launched it during a live-streamed event dubbed An Evening With Amy Macdonald, which raised over £10,000 for the #WeMakeEvents campaign that champions people in the live events industry struggling during the Covid-19 crisis.

Macdonald capped off 2020 by nabbing that year’s Women In Music Award at the Scottish Music Awards and then began 2021 by being named Independent Venue Week’s official ambassador for Scotland. She was also confirmed as part of the line-up for the 2021 TRNSMT festival. That same year, MacDonald represented Scotland at the Free European Song Contest.

In 2025, MacDonald announced her sixth studio album, Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For? along with a UK and European tour.
